Appraisal Methods: Performance appraisal means evaluating an employee's current and/or past performance relative to his or her performance standards. Stripped to its essentials, performance appraisal always involves (1) setting work standards, (2) assessing the employee's actual performance relative to those standards, and (3) providing feedback to the employee with the aim of motivating him or her to eliminate performance deficiencies or to continue to perform above par (Dessler, 2015, p. 260). Reflect on your own personal experience with performance appraisal:
A. Identify one performance appraisal method with which you are familiar.
B. Provide the textbook definition for that particular performance appraisal (from our current textbook or other valid resource).

Performance appraisal method-
I am familiar with the rating scale method of performance appraisal. It assesses the performance of an employee on a rating basis. Suppose there are rating scale of 1 to 5 which provide a rating for the below skills from 1-5.
5- Exceptional: Significantly and consistently exceeds expected performance level.
4- Highly effective- Consistently achieves and often exceeds expected performance level.
3- Effective- Consistently achieves expected performance level.
2- Inconsistent - Inconsistently achieves expected performance level, needs improvement.
1- Unsatisfactory - Rarely achieves established expected performance level.
B. Performance appraisal is the method of acknowledgement and recognising the performance of an employee in the organisation. it is basically a report card of an employee in an organisation. It is a good merit based compensation system.
Performance appraisal system is an effective tool for the managers to evaluate their employee performance. It identifies the individuals strength and weaknesses. It shall be used to
1. Evaluate whether the employees meet the performance requirements.
2. Evalute the the performance of an employee in heir probabtion period.
3. Provide framework for the continuos improvement.
C. Pros and cons of performance appraisal.
Advantages-
1. Assessing and identification od strengh and weaknesses of employee.
2.Regular feedback of an employee which turn improves effectiveness.
3. Helps in achieving the goals of an employee.
4. Provides a structure where employee and manager can discuss on their issue and expectations levels.
5. Employee motivation and appreciation.
6. Facilitate communication.
Disadvantages-
1. Subject to errors and biases.
2. Time consuming.
D. According to me performance appraisal plays a very important role in the well functioning of business or any organisation. It helps in identifying the performance of the employee and also suggest the areas for improvement. An employee can discuss the plan which can help in improving the skills of an employee.
