Question

Assume you are studying a plant species that can either be mated with another plant of the same species or can be self-fertilized (self-pollinated). At generation 0 of your experiment, you have 20 BB plants, 20 bb plants and 60 Bb plants. From that point on, however, they are only self-pollinated. At generation 2, what proportion of allplants arehomozygous? (a) 42.5%; (b) 25%; (c) 85%; (d) 15%; (e) none of the above.

Please explain how to do this. The answer should be C, but I got B for my answer somehow.

Explanation / Answer

All plants arehomozygous

BB self fertilizes all 100% homozygous

bb self fertilizes all 100% homozygous

Bb self fertilizes 50% homozygous

           Bb   X   Bb

   BB bb   Bb Bb

Total = 100+100+50 / 3 = 250/3 = 85%
