Question
Unit 5 focuses on human evolutionary history as well as how humans interact with the environment (ecology). Ever since Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection has been published in the 1800s, scientists in multiple fields of biology (genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, developmental biology, etc.), paleontology and geology have continually produced new data / evidence in support of the evolutionary theory. Recent sequencing of the entire genome of Neanderthal has revealed that we all carry about 2% Neanderthal DNA, suggesting that our ancestors and Neanderthals interbred tens of thousands of years ago.
Human activities on Earth have also changed the planet dramatically. Converting forests into farm land, burning of fossil fuels which releases greenhouse gas, increased pollution of waterways and the air are just a few examples of the negative impacts we have had. More and more people around the globe have realized how important it is for us to change our way of life and slow down the rate we are destroying the planet, as this Earth is the only home we have! This sense of urgency led to the Paris climate agreement signed by 195 countries in the world, pledging to switch from using fossil fuels to renewable energy (solar, wind, etc.). Unfortunately, the current administration's climate denial attitude and their close association with fossil fuel industry is taking us backwards; they are actively dismantling the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), even threaten to pull out of the Paris agreement. All of these make it even more critical for every day citizens such as ourselves to be smart and educated about environmental issues and how they impact our lives.
