Question

Name DNA RNA Protein Worksheet (20pts) 1. Using the template strand of DNA in the first column below, determine the sequence of the complimentary coding DNA strand in the second column. (3pts) 2. A cell will use the template strand of DNA to produce a messenger RNA (mRNA) Using the template molecule through a process called strand of DNA write out the base sequence for the complimentary mRNA strand in the third column. (4pts) 3. Next the cell will take the mRNA and via a process called t will create a polypeptide which will fold into a functional protein. (1pt 4. Remember the triplet codon AUG stands for the amino acid Methionine and is called the "start codon as every protein starts with AUG. In the fourth column, write out all the triplet codons encoded in the RNA (3pts) 5. In the fifth column, use the codon chart on the next page to identify the amino acid sequence of the protein encoded by the template DNA. (3pts) DNA DNA mRNA Triplet Codon Template Coding Amino Acid

Explanation / Answer

Transcription is the process of formation of mRNA from DNA. In this process, mRNA is synthesized complementary to the template strand, hence the mRNA sequence matches that of coding strand of DNA.  When referring to DNA transcription, the coding strand is the DNA strand whose base sequence corresponds to the base sequence of the RNA transcript produced (although with thymine replaced by uracil).

The process of formation of polypeptide through mRNA is termed as Translation. The genetic code on mRNA is read in terms of three bases, i.e., the genetic code is triplet in nature with each codon coding for a specific amino acid.
