The level of insulin in the circulation drops and it leads to rise in the level of glucagon, epinephrine and norepinephrine. The glycogen content of the body is consumed and the main source of energy during this phase is derived from triglycerides. The pancreatic cells start to release glucagon as a response to starvation.
