Question

1. The most significant source of serum testosterone in the normal woman is: a. liver production from ovarian estradiol b. peripheral production from adrenal DHEA c. ovarian granulose cell production d. luteal cell production

2. What is the predominant cause of the diabetogenecity of pregnancy? a. increased pancreatic insulin secretion b. increased placental hPL secretion c. increased pancreatic glucagon secretion d. increased placental ACTH secretion.

3. Anabolic steroid abuse can produce a significant reduction in the size of the testes. Provide a plausible explanation for this phenomenon. Discontinuing anabolic steroid abuse may permit the testes to reattain their original size. Describe the probable sequence of events that may underlie this regrowth. (3 pts).

Explanation / Answer

1,c)ovarian granulose cell production

2)b) increased placental hPL secretion

3. In human body testosterone level is regulated by hypothalamus-pituitary.gonad axis or HPG axis. hypothalamus is situated in brain and secret Gonadotropin releasing hormone or GnRH. This GnRH hormone moves to the anterior pituitary gland and bind with the receptor of secretary cells that are present in anterior pituitary. This binding results in the production of luteinizing hormone or LH and follicle-stimulating hormone or FSH. These LH and FSH hormone further travels in the blood. Now, in male, this LH hormone will activated the interstitial cells lof the testes and as a result testosterone hormone is produced. On the other hand FSH will control spermatogenesis. If we look at the HPG axis to testosterone production, there is a negative feedback loop exists, meaning if there is higher amount of testerone in the male body, then hypothalaus will send signal to testes not to produce more testosterone. Whereras in low testosterone environement, hapothalamus will results in higher amount of testosterone production. Androgenic-anabolic Steroids or AAS are synthetic counterpart of normal testosterone. When they are used for long they can increase the amount of testerone in body which results in activation of negative loop of HPG axis. This results in lowering the terstosterone production by testes causing reduction in the size of the testes. Whereas, when a person start to discontinue the use of AAS, the amount of testerone in body becomes normal once again which might help to get back the normal size of testes.
