14) Based on the given information w.r.t Alpine plant diversity of peaks in Northern vs Southern Rock Mountains:
Alpha diversity: Diversity within a particular area or ecosystem and is expressed as number of species.
Gamma diversity: Gamma diversity is a measure representing overall diversity for different ecosystems within a region. Therefore overall diversity = 30 + 20 - 5 = 45 (5 are common species and was counted twice, therefore number 5 is subtracted once). 2 habitats with 45 species total diversity.
Beta diversity: Beta diversity represents degree of change in species richness from one habitat to another and can be determined as the ratio between regional (gamma) diversity and local (alpha) diversity. Amount of species change between the ecosystem.
Therefore, Beta diversity = (30-5) + (20-5) = 25 + 15 = 40
