Question

Although we have not yet covered the components of the innate immune system, think about how organisms can defend against microbes. Which of the functions, below, might be important mechanisms involved in innate immune defense? (select all that apply)

Physical and chemical barriers, such as the epithelial linings of the skin and gut.

Specialized receptors on cells that can recognize common microbial patterns.

Anti-microbial proteins at epithelial surfaces and in the blood.

Immune cells that can phagocytose (ingest) and kill microbes.

Immune cells that can recognize infected cells and kill them.

Proteins that promote inflammation.

Explanation / Answer

innate immunity refers to the non-specific defence mechanisms which come in play immediately or within very short span of time of the entry or appearance of the foreign antigen into the body.

There are three types of barriers that play the key role in the innate immune system. they are physical, chemica and immune system cells or biological.

Under physical and chemical barriers, skin , epithelial lining of the gut, mucus, acidic secretions like HCl of the stomach, lysozyme of the saliva, tears etc . come in play.

Innate immune system is completely non-specific, any thing that is foreign is a target for innate immunity. if foreign antigen manages to cross through physical and chemical barriers then it will be attacked upon by the cells of the innate immunity.

There are several types of cells that operate in innate immunity. They are 1.Phagocytes, 2.Macrophages, 3.Mast cells, 4.Neutrophils, 5.Eocinophils, 6.Basophils, 7.Natural killer cells and 8.Dendritic cells.

Along with the above cells, even complement system also plays its role as a part of innate immunity response. In complement system many proteins are involved to play their role in innate immunity response.
