Question
9. A chimpanzee breeder sells offspring of his chimp colony to exotic pet fanciers for $80,000 per baby chimp. Last year he grossed $480,000 from the sale of six chimps. The local authorities suspected the breeder of trafficking illegal wild animals, because he only had six adults in his colony. The chimp breeder protested that his colony produced all of the babies sold; that all four of his adult females gave birth the previous year and two fortuitously gave birth to fraternal twins. The authorities collected blood samples from the adult females (F), adult males (M) and their purported six offspring (O) for forensic DNA analysis. Data for a variable nucleotide tandem repeat (VNTR) is shown in the figure below. The first lane (L) shows a ladder of DNA fragments differing by the size of one VNTR repeat. The next six lanes show DNA amplified from the breeder's four adult females (Fi- F4) and two adult males (Mi, M2). The last six lanes show DNA amplified from the six baby chimps sold (O1-Os). What do the DNA fragments in lanes Fi through O6 represent? That is, what kind of information do they provide that is used for forensic analysis? (4 points) a. If not, which baby chimps were not bred in his colony? Explain your conclusion. (4 points)Explanation / Answer
1) VNTR is a short nucleotide sequence located in a genome. these short nucleotide organised in a tandem repeat. in progeny half genome is from father and half is from mother. so if we amplify the VNTR region of all three (mother, father and child) then we can establish the parent identification.
2) in the above figure, both mother and father contain 2 VNTR region so children will have one VNTR from father and one VNTR region from mother.
O1 is child of F3 and M2.
O2 is child of F3 and M1.
O3 is child of F1 and M2
O4 is not related to this.
O5 is not related to this.
O6 is child of F4 and M2.
