Case 2

Bobby is a 7-month-old African-American baby who has been exclusively breast fed since birth. His mother does not plan to feed him solid foods until he is a year old. His height, weight, and head circumference are in the 50th percentile for his age and gender.

Explanation / Answer

Case 1--

1. From the given information , we can deduce that Judy is slightly underweight. She should include more fats and carbohydrates in her diet. She should take nuts[ fats] , meat [ proteins and fats] and carbohydrates [ grains, fruits and green vegetables] in her diet. Diet soda should be replaced with fresh fruit juice so that she gets the energy along with the necessary vitamins and minerals.

2] She is slightly underweight and needs to increase fats and carbohydrates in her diet. Since she is lactose intolerant , dairy products cannot be included in her diet so, other sources have to recommended for.

3] Judy seems to be an active and normal female only she seems to be a little overconcerned about her weight. Ideally her weight should have been around 120 to 140 lbs. She needs to overcome this fear of gaining weight. She should follow her normal routine but must include some more fats and carbs in her diet without any fear of gaining weight.

Case 2--

1] Bobby should be fed with some cereals, mashed fruits and boiled and mashed vegetables along with mother's milk . Extra nourishment is required at this stage as mother's milk is not sufficient to fulfill the baby's needs.

2] Bobby is a 7 month old baby. This is the time of teething. He willrequire more of calcium and vitamins at this time. All the required nutrients cannot be fulfilled by mother's milk alone. So, extra food in the form of cereals, fruits and vegetables are essential for him.

3] Bobby's height , weight and head circumference should be on the higher side of what it actually is. Although, he is not malnourished, but at this stage of growth his body's demands for nutrients cannot be provided by mother's milk alone. So, the extra sources of nutrients are required for a healthy growth and development of the baby.
