Question
(8 points) Variations in a population of moths allow for some of its members to be able to adapt to environmental changes. The better adapted of the moths will be able to survive the change and thus prevail as the fittes?" of the species. (a) Describe three mechanisms in which variation can occur within a species population. (b) Explain which mechanism or mechanisms would be responsible for the survival of a population of peppered moths better than white moths in an environment affected by industrial soot. Justify your answer 1. coreExplanation / Answer
Variation are the basis of evolution and one of postulates of neo- darvisnism is variation
Mechanisms through which vairation can occur in species=
**mutation= sudden heritable change in genetic material of individuals .
** recombination= crossing over causing reshuffling of genes combinations which provide new combinations of existing alleles and gene (variation are random and directionless)
** gene migration= movement of individuals from one place to another ( immigrants adding new alleles to local population)
** genetic drift= randon changes in allele frequency occuring BY CHANCE is called genetic drift.
Answer2= natural selection is man force responsible for survival of peppered moths.
During industrialisation, becuase of smoke .. Background becomes dark on which white moths are clearly visible and predators can easily eat them.
However dark coloured moths are camoflouged beacuse of dark / similiar envirnment and therefore protected against predotors and survive and get selected ..
