Describe the selective and differential properties of mannitol salt agar (MSA) for the isolation and iden- tification of staphylococci. 2. Describe the differential property of blood agar for the isolation and identification of staphylococci. 368Explanation / Answer
1. MSA act as a selective medium as it contain high amount of salt. Hence, all bacteria could not grow in that media except staphylococcus. MSA act as differential media because it contain sugar mannitol.which they used as fermentation substrate and convert phenol red to yellow.
2. Staphylococcus aureus produce a toxin that perform the lysis of the blood. Other species of staphylococcus does not do that. Hence, it is used as differentiatial media.
