Question

iz Control Crick et al found that not all combinations of (+) and (-) frameshift mutations results in suppression do not work. Select one: and an rli phenotype. Which of the following is a possible explanation of why some +/- combinations ?.A stop codon is located between the (+) and (-) frameshift mutations. o bA necessary part of the protein is encoded by the region of the gene located between the (+) and o Not all combinations of (+) and (-) frameshift mutations puts the ribosome back into the original (-) frameshift mutations reading frame. o eAll of the first three explanations are correct. Check ?dTwo of the above explanations are correct.

Explanation / Answer

The correct option is d) Two of the above explanations are correct.

A suppressor mutation is one which counteracts the effects of another mutation present within same gene or at a different locus. Example - Mutation in a reading frame by addition or deletion affects the protein function. However, by inducing another mutation within the same gene/reading frame at a different location may restore the protein function.

Some combinations of (+) and (-) frameshift mutations do not result in suppression because -

1. A stop codon within the reading frame will result in premature termination of protein.

2. The mutation may be present in an essential region of the gene which is not counteracted by another (+) / (-) mutation.
