1.

Global climate patterns generated by variation in solar radiation and atmospheric circulation cells (Chapter 2 of the textbook) provide a basis for understanding the geographic distribution of biomes (Chapter 3). The transition from the wet tropics to the seasonal temperate biomes seen in Figure 3.5A in your textbook results in large part from the Hadley cells (see Figure 2.7 below). Ascending air in the atmosphere generates high amounts of precipitation of the tropics, while the descending air at the northern and southern edges creates dry, hot desert zones. Atmospheric scientists have noted a shift in Hadley cell boundaries over the past several decades (Heffernan 2016). The cause for the observed shift is uncertain but anthropogenic caused climate change is predicted to cause greater expansion of Hadley cells over the next century. The sun heats Earth's surface most intensely at the equator Hadley 30°N High pressure EquorO pressure Low Tropics This heating leads to the uplift of air, creating a large band of low atmospheric pressure. Hadley cell 30°S High pressure Subsidence of air creates a band of high atmospheric pressure Subsidence

Explanation / Answer

Hadley cell is a region on the globe extending from the equator towards the poles where within this region the ar circulates bringing about weather changes. But as the climate is changing the region for the circulation of air is expanding at a visible rate. The rate of expansion is 0.8 degrees per decade. From current year to 2080 are 62years or 6.2 decades. The range of expansion will be 0.8 x 6.2 = 4.96 degrees further north by the end of 2080.
