Question

Adam Moore argues that we retain some privacy when we are in the workplace. (He is talking about keeping some of your activities private during the time you are at work--he is not talking about information that should be considered private regardless of the circumstances.) Discuss this view by answering one of the following questions.

(1) If you agree that we ought to retain some privacy at work, give three examples of activities that you engage in or might engage in while at work that you ought to have the right to keep private.  Assume that these activities are not part of your job, but they are activities that you engage in while you are at work. Explain why these activities are not your employer's business.

(2) If you disagree with Moore, explain why you think we abandon our privacy when we enter the workplace.

Explanation / Answer

Adam Moore agrument :- that we retain some privacy when we are at work is true and is driven from pactical life situations. It can be more closely understood by people who actually spend 10 - 12 hrs of a day time in office and also face tough office environment.

At times we indulge into activites which are purely personal and have got nothing to do with our office work. These activites do not consume much of time and concentration but form part of our personal to do list. To name a few of these actives : -

A). Payment of utility bills - such as electricity bills, phone bills, internet bill.

B). Online fund tranfers - to friends and family

C).Booking travell package, shows, movies, weekend planning

D). Taking up investment policy, tax planning.

E). Others.

Due to high work presure these days its difficult to curve time for various personal commmitments. Indulging into these activites has a duel benifit. It adds to maintaning work life balance well and also at times gives a break from continuous office work.

It should be always made sure such ativities are done when work presure is comparitively low and devoting time for these activies can be afforded without compramising on the qaulity of work delivered.

While we do these things in office hours, as held by Moore; it should be done privately and smartly without letting anyone know about it. Collegues and Bosses who come to know you devote office time to personal work as well, tend to form a perception of you not working enough for no reason. Such a perception pertains even if you have already finished working on what you were supposed to do. It is often related to you not being serious enough and not devoting enough time to work. In long runs it would effect your performance evaluation.

At the same time if devoting time to these activites entails a better management of your personal life and no compramise on work, it can be done during office hours privately.
