Question
13. a) Wasps with long wings are dominant to those with short wings. Just before you passed out from the multiple stings, you managed to determine that 40% of the wasps in a hive had short wings. What percent of the wasps are heterozygous? What percentage are homozygous dominant? b) The frequency of allele A is 19% and allele a is 81%. If the population is in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium, calculate the percentage of heterozygotes. Now assume the population is NOT in H-W equilibrium. Calculate the percent of homozygous recessives.Explanation / Answer
13.a) Frequency of short wing (q2)= 40% = 0.4
q = 0.632
According to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium,
p = 1-q = 1-0.632 = 0.368
Heterozygous frequency = 2pq = 2*0.632*0.368 = 0.465
Homozygous dominant frequency = p2 = 0.3682 = 0.135
(Note: To check, p2+2pq+q2 = 1 => 0.4+0.465+0.135=1)
b) p = 19% =0.19; q=81% =0.81
Heterozygous frequency = 2pq =2*0.19*0.81 = 0.308
Recessive frequency can not be calculated as the poplulation is not in HWE.
