Explanation / Answer

Answer for the first question:

Factors that cause intellectual and developmental disabilities include:

1. Infections at the time of birth or occurring after birth.

2. Environmental factors.

3. Chromosomal abnormalities.

4. Metabolic

5. Nutrition.

Prevention of these disabilities by prevention of each factor:

Infections can be prevented by maintaining sterile conditions and hygiene after the birth of the child. Several measures must be taken to ensure hygiene. Personal protective equipment and other standard measures must be practiced.

Environmental factors such as fetal alcohol syndrome, exposure to toxins, etc. may become predisposing factors. The pregnant woman must abstain from alcohol and must take care of her health. Further, healthcare and regular checkups must be done to prevent predisposition to such disabilities.

Chromosomal abnormalities cannot be prevented, however, these can be detected earlier. Proper nutrition and healthcare must be given to children to avoid any abnormalities and mental retardation.
