Basically there are two types of disturbances present in ecosystem – i) Natural disturbances and ii) Man-made disturbances. Surprisingly, some disturbance can be beneficial, but too disturbances affect ecosystem's sustainability. Ecosystem sustainability actually depends on a balance between too much and not enough disturbance.
From beneficial aspect, the right amount of disturbance can help to maintain ecosystem diversity by creating areas where overgrowing organisms can live. Some organisms actually prefer to grow in disturbed areas. For this, they first colonize themselves which is the first step in repairing ecosystem damage. Even not enough disturbance lowers diversity, so right amount of disturbances can increase diversity.
For example, Jack pine is well adapted in boreal forests after exposing to crown fires. They have specialized serotinous cones that only open and disperse seeds with sufficient heat generated by fire. As a result, this species often dominates in areas where competition has been reduced by fire.
Naturally occurred disturbances sometimes provide conditions that favor the success of different species over pre-disturbance organisms but manmade disturbances can kill or displace organisms, and disrupt the ecosystem. Clear-cutting of tropical rainforests, the damming or polluting of rivers and streams, the introduction of various chemicals and particulates into the atmosphere from industrial facilities are all major events of disturbances that disrupt ecosystem. Not only this lowers the diversity of the ecosystem but also it lowers the prouctivity.
For example, increasing urbanization leads to enormous amount of deforestation which kills organism and disrupt the ecosystem.
