Question

Diffusion and the Cell Membrane 16 Experiment 1: Osmosis across a semi-permeable membrane (con't) Beaker leaier ? Fig. 3. Set up for Experiment 1. 1. Before you conduct the protocol, develop your hypotheses. In complete sentences, hypothesize what the tonicity (hypotonic, isotonic, or hypertonic) of the cells in Fig. 3 will be following Cell A: Cell B: Cell C: Cell D: Protocol 1. Create sugar solutions: 1 % sugar solution-Add 5 grams of sugar to your 250ml graduated cylinder. Fill the graduate cylinder to 250ml with tap water. Place plastic wrap over your graduated cylinder and shake. Pour the contents of your graduated cylinder ina small saucepan. For a second time fill the graduate cylinder with 250ml of tap water. Pour the water in the same sauce pan. Heat the sugar solution until the sugar has completely dissolved. Once finished, put this in a container labeled 1% sugar solution 20% sugar solution-Rinse the sauce pan. Add 100 grams of sugar to your graduated cylinder. Add water to the 250ml mark. Place plastic over the top and shake. Pour the contents into your clean sauce pan. Add an additional 250ml of water to the sauce pan. Heat the solution until the sugar melts. Place the contents in a container labeled 20% sugar solution. www.thebiologyprimer.com

Explanation / Answer

1) in beaker 1 both the cell and beaker is filled with 1% sugar solution so there is no net flow of water or solute. so the cell is in the isotonic state.

2) in beaker 2 cell has 1% sugar and beaker has 50% sugar solution. the water will come out from the cell and cell will shrink. the cell is in the hypotonic state.

3) in beaker 3 and 4 cells are in the hypertonic state. one cell contains 50% and one cell contains 20% sugar solution and beaker contains 1% sugar solution.
