Question

Type of Study: Findings of the actual study (in your own words): d. Brazilian soccer championships involve a large number of teams and are known to cause stress and loss of muscle mass besides other negative physical consequences. This study was designed to compare the effects produced by three types of protein supplements on body composition, biochemical parameters and performance of a top Brazilian professional soccer team during an actual tournament. Twenty-four athletes assessed as having a normal nutrient intake were divided into three groups according to supplementation. Immediately after each daily training, the athletes,.received 1 g x kg(-1) of body weight x day(-1) of either whey protein (WP), hydrolyzed whey pretein (HWP) or casein (CAS) for eight weeks. Before and after the experimental period, anthropometric characteristics, physical performance by the yo-yo and 3000m tests, and several biochemical variables in blood (uric acid, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, creatinine, glucose) were measured. While no improvement in physical performance was observed, casein supplementation resulted in muscle mass increase (pc0.039), while WP and HWP favoured the maintenance of the initial muscle mass. It was concluded that supplementation immediately after training sessions with any of the three sources of protein during the competitive period is capable of sustaining or even increasing muscle mass. Explanation / Answer

Hi Answer:

The finding of the above study in simplified language is as follows:

In this article, the effect of different protein diets on the athletes is examined. The Brazilian soccer team is applied as the test source in this study. In this study, the 3 different types of protein supplements ( Whey protein (WP), hydrolyzed whey protein (HWP) and casein (CAS)) was given to the players and the effect of these 3 protein supplements on the body composition, biochemical parameters and on the performance of these players were examined. To conduct this experiment author divided 24 member soccer team into 3 different groups and each group is feed with different supplement immediately after training. Every athlete received 1g per kg according to his body weight per day. Before running the experiment author examine various biochemical parameters such as uric acid, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, creatinine, and glucose as well as physical parameters by yo-yo and 3000m tests of every player of each group and used these results a the control of the experiment. After that author run the experiment and feed 3 groups different proteins diets for 8 weeks and analyze the same parameters which were analyzed before the experiment and the results concluded that these supplements didn’t improve the physical performance of the athletes. The casein supplements increase the muscle mass whereas the WP and HWP maintained the initial muscle mass. The author concluded from above results that these three protein supplements (WP, HWP, and CAS) consumed immediately after training session help in the sustaining or increase the muscle mass during the competition.
