Research nonverbal communication in diverse cultures to see how it affects doctor-patient interaction. Use your research to write your responses to this scenario:
You are a human resource director of a hospital and you've been tasked with creating a policy statement which educates your employees about different nonverbal communication. You need to include situations that may cause miscommunication among doctors and patients. You explain what doctors and therapists need to be aware of in order to communicate effectively with multi-cultural patients. Please cite reference.
Explanation / Answer
Non verbal communication is using sign language or gestures or hand signs or expressions to communicate. In certain scenarios people communicate using non verbal communication particularly in situations when they greet people, thank someone, or to ask for something.
Different cultures have diverse types of non verbal communication and signs that convey different meaning. For example in greeting others, japanese bow their head, indians say namaste, and few people shake hands , few hug one another etc. Non verbal communication greately differs from one culture to another. one sign may be consideredgood in one culture which has a bad meaning on other culture.
While communicating with doctors people use different nonverbal communication cues. Some patients may share their pain by expressing their pain by crying, hugging the doctor, expressing the pain through their actions rather than speaking. The doctors should try to understand what the patient is conveying by understanding few meanings of non vebal cues by learning about them in order to deal with divers cultral patients particularly when language is a barrier in communicating. because when patient is not aware of language then he may try to communicate mostly using non verbal cues.
As a HR director a policy statement and providing training to employees helps to deal with different patients using translators helps to better communicate with patients of different cultures. training on different nonverbal cues helps them the doctors to better undersatnd the patients. taking the help of translators who know multilanguages will be helpful in case of emergencies. conducting sessions, videos, books on different sign and theirmeanings that are self explaantory saves time and cost of training.
