6. “How Many People Can Our Planet Really Support”.

The article focuses on CO2 emissions as being very important in determining the sustainability of the human population on Earth but we shouldn’t only consider that one thing. * What are two other major human activities that will also be important?

_________________________     ______________________________

* In developing countries are rates of reproduction going up or going down? ______

*Explain why. __________________________________________________________

Explanation / Answer

Human activities which will have an impact on sustainability are –

1. Mining of natural resources, including water, agricultural land, forests, fisheries, coal, and natural gas. Excessive mining would lead to depletion of these resources.

2. Disparity in social groups – high income and low income gaps becoming large can lead to uneven use of resources.

In developing countries, the rates of reproduction are going down.

The reasons for declining rates of reproduction can be attributed to various reasons, including rising incomes to growing female literacy. Some studies have even suggested a positive co-relation between the advent of television and social media with declining rates of reproduction. Other factors include higher costs of childcare and education, changing religious values, and increasing participation of women in the workforce.
