Question

O Kaplan Electronic Ht e- Jones & Bartlett Lea Answer all questions in your initial post 1. The human immune system has a lot of back-up plans built into its design. Many cells and other immune components have similar roles. Provide an example of two components that have similar or identical roles in the immune system. 2. If you had to choose, do you feel it would be more detrimental to a person's health to have no T cells or no B cells? Which do you think would impact a person's overall health more profoundly? Why? 3. Pathogens have many "tricks" to avoid immune detection and "buy time" to establish an infection. If you were a pathogen, which ONE of the following components of the immune system do you believe would be the most helpful to avoid or disable? Provide the reason why you selected it and any support for your choice a) Phagocytic cells b) Inflammation c) Complement d) Cytokines

Explanation / Answer

1.There are two cells that are similar in their roles in the immune system. They are CTL's and NK cells . CTL's are cytotoxic T- lymphocytes and NK cells are natural killer cells. Both these cells have similar functions in cell mediated immunity where these both cells act on the infected cells destroying them by releasing of perforins and granzymes. Even they act similarly CTL's differ by acting only by antibody dependent manner while NK cells act in an antibody independent manner.

2.B cells are more important to immune system compared to T cells because B cells are the antigen presenting cells and they are the only cells that recognise the antigens while t cells can't. They release the antibodies when stimulated in humoral immunity. Even in cell mediated immunity if T cells are absent CTL's will not form but killer cells can substitute the role of T cells . So lacking of B cells would be more detrimental.

3. For a pathogen to survive it is best to avoid the cytokines because they are the ones that activate the cells of the immune system to initiate phagocytosis and cytolysis.
