Bacterial growth curve can be explained by 4 stages lag phase, log phase, stationary phase and death or decline phase. In lag phase the culture is newly introduced into medium and require some time to adjust to the environment. In log phase, the culture starts utilizing the nutrients and multiplies in number exhibiting exponential growth. In stationary phase the growth is stopped and number of cells maintained at a constant rate. This means the number of cells surviving are equal to the number of cells dead. This is because of depletion of nutrients in the medium, accumulation of waste products and competition for limited nutrients. In death phase the cells decline in number as the cells undergo death.
