Question

Q1.8. Based on the graphs in Question 6, shown again below, which of the following is the most reasonable prediction? BEFORE no minnows AFTER (with minnows) Zooplankton 2 Zooplankton 2 Zooplankton 1 Zooplankton 1 Algae 2 Algae 2 Algae 1 Algae 1 0 50 100 150 200 250 0 50 100 150 200 250 Population Size Population Size Placed in equal numbers in an experimental lake with food but no predators, zooplankton 2 will outcompete zooplankton 1 Placed in an experimental tank with a choice between algae 1 and algae 2, zooplankton 1 feeds preferentially on algae 1 Placed in an experimental tank with a choice between algae 1 and algae 2, zooplankton 1 feeds preferentially on algae 2 All of the predictions above are likely to occur. Explanation / Answer

Option c is correct because in the absence of predator in first graph the number of zooplankton 1 is high and number of algae 2 is low it means zooplankton 1 feed on algae 2. When we add predators which feed on zooplankton so number of zooplankton 1 decreases and algae 2 increase because there is no one to feed on algae 2.
