Some proteins are synthesized on free ribosomes in the cytosol, while others are synthesized on ribosomes attached to the ER. Discuss, in general terms, the different fates of these two groups of proteins.

Explanation / Answer

The essential difference between the two groups of proteins lie in the fact that free ribosomes generate proteins that remain internal to the cell, and are utilised by the cell. For e.g., proteins used for food metabolism belong to this class.

On the contrary, the proteins produced by attached ribosomes move out of the cell boundaries. For e.g., enzymes involved in digestion belong to this class of proteins.
