Question
13. In a species of grass, height is determined by 5 genes. Each gene has two alleles, one allele contributes 2cm to plant height and the other is non-contributing (adds 0 cm to height). If a plant that is aabbccddee is 10cm tall (all alleles noncontributing) and a plant that is AABBCCDDEE is 30cm tall (all alleles contributing). a. If you cross aabbccddee x AABBCCDDEE, what will be the height of the progeny? b. If you cross the F1 from above to itself, what proportion of the F2 progeny will be 22cm tall? b. What proportion of the F2 progeny will be 10cm?Explanation / Answer
If AABBCCDDEE X aabbccddeee
F1 will be AaBbCcDdEe
dominant allele contribute 10cm and no contribution of other recessive allele
therefore, the height of the plant would be
height will be average of the two = 30+10/2 = 20 cm
Cross AaBbCcDdEe * AaBbCcDdEeFdf
There will be many progeny of varying height out of which atlease one would be AABBCCDDEE = 30cm and one will be aabbccddee = 10cm and many other of heights in between 10 and 30 cm.
b.Out of all only one progeny will be aabbccddee
and totatl progeny will be 210 = 1024
So ratio of aabbccddeeff with 10 cm height = 1/1024
