From one run of the proposed electron transport chain oretically be generated? , how many ATP equivalents in energy could c) 5 7.3

Explanation / Answer

9. c. Bansool

More the positive value of potential, the more likely the substance is to be reduced.

Here,

Ickygreenone + H+ + 2e- gives Ickygreenol (-0.5V) : reduction reaction

Bansool gives Bansoom + H+ + 2e- (+1.25) : oxidation reaction [reversed the reaction, so potential positive]

Ickygreenone+ H+ + 2e- + Bansool GIVES Ickygreenol + Bansoom + H+ + 2e-

Cancel the common terms, we get:

Ickygreenone + Bansool GIVES Ickygreenol + Bansoom : overall reaction

Ickygreenone is getting electrons from Bansool and getting reduced ; Bansool is reducing agent / reductant

Bansool looses electrons and getting oxidized ; Ickygreenone is oxidized agent / oxidant

Electrons flow from the reductant (oxidized form) of a redox couple with a lower electron affinity and a lower (more negative) potential to the oxidant of another redox couple having a higher electron affinity and a higher (positive or less negative) potential.

10. d. Ickygreenone

This oxidant gets reduced accepting electrons.

11. c. -0.5V and +1.25V

Difference in voltage (highest-lowest) is (+1.25) - (-0.5) = +0.75

electron flow is from lower (more negative) potential to higher (less negative) potentail.

12. a. -34.5kcal/mol

Free energy, Delta G= -nFdeltaE

= -2 X 23.063 X 0.75 = -34.59kCal/mol

free energy is always negative for a spontaneous reaction.

13. c. 5

-7.3kCal/mol is needed for the formation of 1 ATP molecule (high energy phosphate bond).

34.59 / 7.3 = 4.7 approximately 5.
