Explanation / Answer
a. The feedlot operator is afraid of rising price of corn in future ,so hedge himself from rise in price he should purchase May corn futures on September 30 at the rate of $ 2.48 / bu.
b.No of Futures = Exposure / lot size. = 25000/ 5000= 5 contacts at $ 2.48 / bu.
c.On April 1 , May futures price = $2.45
On squaring off it's position there will be loss of 2.4 8- 2.45= 0.03 per bushel× 5× 5000= $ 750.
d.The operator will buy corn from market at 2.45 per bu. and there is a loss of 0.03 pu . Outflow will be 2.45× 25000= $61250 and loss amount of $ 750 . Total cost= 62000/ 25000 = 2.48 per bu.
e.If operator would have entered into forward contact there would be profit of 2.35-2.29= 0.06 per bushel.
