Research what eutrophication is. Explain why farm runoff can negatively affect aquatic animals O eScience Labs, LLOExplanation / Answer
Answer 1: Consumers are those organisms which depend on other organisms for food and cannot synthesize on their own. These are classified as primary if they are herbivores and consume the producers (autotrophs) and secondary if they are carnivores and consume the primary consumers.
For example: If a food chain consists of Grass, Deer and Lion. Deer consumes grass, so it is primary consumer, Lion consumes deer so it is secondary consumer.
Answer 2: Fungi lack photosynthetic pigments in them and so they cannot synthesize their own food. Also they cannot derive energy by chemosynthesis. So, they depend on producers and are in the category of heterotrophs. They can be parasites (Eg. Plant parasites like Fusarium, Rhizoctonia etc ) or saprotrophs (Eg. Mushrooms). As saprotrophs, they form the role of decomposers in food chain.
Answer 3: Organic compounds can be naturally produced only in the absence of Oxygen because oxygen tends to oxidize these compounds. For example: Methanol, Ethanol, acetic acid etc are produced by fermentation in the absence of oxygen by the action of bacteria. The basic organic compounds from their elements or simpler compounds like CO2 or water are synthesized in absence of oxygen. The derivatization can be done in presence of oxygen in laboratories.
Answer 4: Fishes have to expend more energy than humans to collect oxygen because:
Because of above reasons it is difficult for fishes to collect oxygen than humans.
Answer 5 : Highest Dissolved oxygen is found in the upper layer of water body where the sunlight can penetrate. In case of oceans, it is in the epipelagic zone (till 200 m from surface).
The lowest is in the deeper region of the water body. As the depth of water body increases, there is decrease in dissolved oxygen. In case of oceans, dissolved oxygen is minimum at mesopelagic zone (200-1000 m deep) and is negligible below that.
Answer 6: Eutrophication is the condition when water bodies have dense plant or algal growth due to presence of excessive amounts of nutrients and minerals in them. These plants and algae when dead are fed over by decomposers which utilize most of available oxygen and create oxygen deficiency in the water bodies.
Farm runoff that is water from the agricultural farms which reaches water bodies through irrigation or rain. This water contains fertilizers, nutrient supplements, pesticides etc. which on entering water bodies results in excess amount of minerals and nutrients and so causes eutrophication which then causes excessive plant growth. The dense plant growth prevent sunlight to reach deep in water body and decreases the amount of dissolved oxygen. When these plants die, the planktons consume them and then further decrease the available oxygen by utilizing it.
