1) the top and bottom margins of a poster are 8 cm and the side margins are each 9 cm. If the area of printed material on the poster is fixed at 380 square cm, find the dimensions of the poster with the smallest area.

** I have found similar questions on here and tried plugging in my numbers but some how I am not getting the correct answer.

2) A parcel delivery service will deliver a package only if the length plus the girth (distance around, taken perpendicular to the length) does not exceed 116 inches. Find the maximum volume of a rectangular box with square ends that satisfies the delivery companys requirements.

Explanation / Answer

1) x*y=380 and want to minimize (x+16)*(y+18) so minimize (380/y+16)*(y+18). Multiply this out, take the derivative and set equal to zero.

2) V=l*s^2 and 4s+l=116 so l=116-4s. Then V=(116-4s)*s^2. Take the derivative of this and set equal to zero.
