One farm uses 6 acre feet of water and the other uses 2.2 acre feet. Which farm do you think uses flood irrigation and which uses subsurface drip? When would you expect the farmers to turn their irrigation systems on- when the water tension is 1 bar or 10 bars? Remember water tension in soils is a measure of how tightly the water is held to the soil. The farmers are approached by a vendor that is suggesting that putting a mulch layer on top of the soil would be a good deal and would save on their irrigation requirements. Is this true? And if so why?
