Question
An 80 g meteor is travelling at 7500 m/sec. a. What is the kinetic energy of the meteor? b. The meteor is at an initial temperature of-50 degree C. If it hits the atmosphere of the earth, losing virtually all of its kinetic energy (assume literally all is lost, even thought this is not realistic) and if all the kinetic energy is turned into heat, and if all the heat is absorbed by the meteor (a lot of ifs!) what will be the final temperature of the meteor? (specific heat of meteor is 0.84 joule/g degree C). Will it reach the melting point of quartz, which is 1650 degree C?Explanation / Answer
A. Kinetic energy = ½ mv 2
Mass= 80 gms = .08 kgs
Velocity = 7500 m/s
Kinetic energy = ½ * .08*7500=300kg m2/S2
