Question
assumingAssuming you have just started your new job at the Great Big Electric Company (GEBC). You had expected your new job would be in the Design Engineering Department but instead they placed you in the Strategic Planning Section (SPS). Your new supervisor. Ken, has decided to give you an easy project for your first assignment. The operating license for one of GBEC’s two nuclear power plants is going to expire in fifteen years and the plant’s generation capacity needs to be replaced. The GBEC board of directors has made it known that they want the new facility to be solar powered. The GBEC property Acquisition Unit is anxious to being purchasing property for the new facility but the need to know how much property to buy. SPS has been tasked with determining how much acreage to purchase for the new Solar Generation Station. During your job interview you told Ken that you had taken a course in collage about power plants and consequently he has given this assignment to you. Ken has provided you with some technical information (see below and following page) about the nuclear plant and a nearby solar generation installation and has arranged a tour to both facilities where you will be able to ask additional questions. Determine how many acres will be required for a flat solar panel power plant installation large enough to replace the nuclear plant when it is decommissioned. ( Hint, NO power plant operates at full capacity all the time.) see http://smecosolar.com/ for information about the solar generation station.
Explanation / Answer
GBEC an Electric Power generation Company new strategy is to convert one of the two Nuclear Power Plants to Solar Power Plant as the License for Nuclear Power Plant is expiring in 15 years.
The GBEC Company Strategic Planning Section (SPS) has given me the assignment of purchasing property for generating equal power generation by new Solar Power Plant in place Nuclear Power Plant.
I have taken this assignment as a challenge, visited 2 Nuclear Power plants. Made studies how much power generated by one of the Nuclear plant going to be decommissioned and replaced by solar power plant. I have to make a plan how much area is required for new solar plant. Calaculated how much solar power required to fulfil the deficit fo power due to decommissioning of nuclear plant. My strategic planning study results are detailed below.
The nuclear power plant is supplying power to 600 houses in the area.
The new solar plant to need to produce 5.5 MW
For this facility 33 acres of land required from 47 acres land available.
The Solar plant consists of 23,716 280 watt modules to be installed with a tilt of 20 degrees and an azimuth of 180 degrees.
The system is to be connected to distributing grid using 11,500 kilowatt inverters to convert the DC power to AC power.
The Timeline for the solar power project is as follows:
All the constructions and installation planned to be completed as per the scheduled mile stones given below
Preconstruction milestone dates
Preconstruction and milestone date
2. Site Due Diligence & 50% Design—12/7/17
3. 1603 Material Procurement—12/15/17
4. SMECO Design Revisions—12/15/17
5. Special Exception Permit—3/20/17
Construction and completion date

I submitted my strategic plan to my supervisor Ken. He has appreciated it and recommended to submite it to Board GEBC. Board of Directors GBEC approved it and now planning start the solar power plant as per schedulee plan
