Question
In the United States approximately 67% of power production is from fossil fuels, 39% being from coal. Fuel and utilities purchased by the Utilities Department annually totals 68,000 tons of Indiana coal, 3.4M therms of natural gas with transportation, 229M kW hours of 12.5 kV power, and (771M gallons of water and sewage)*not used for calculations*, In one year how many KWh of electricity could be generated with the amount of coal IU purchases? (1 short ton (2,000lbs) of standard coal = 19.34 million BTU of energy and Coal = 10,498 Btu/kWh)? In one year how much electricity could be generated with the amount of natural gas IU purchases? How much total electricity does IU use if we included the possible electrical generation from purchased sources as well as coal and natural gas possible generation? Explain why we would need to consider different efficiencies of power production from different sources of power generation. What are some negative impacts of using coal? (Be specific) How much land would be necessary to produce the same amount of energy IU uses from wind turbines (land use requirement 1,335 m2/Gigawatt-Hour)? Answer in acres of land and number of football fields. (Use the answer from number 3 for this calculation) What are some positive and negative attributes of the use of wind turbines to generate electricity? (Be specific) Part 1. Is it feasible to produce energy with wind turbines in Indiana? Use this link to look at the wind map- http://apps2.eere.energy.gov/wind/windexchange/windmaps/residential_scale.asp Part 2. Is it advisable for IU to consider wind power production as a long-term goal to meet energy demands? Please elaborate on your response, not just yes or no. How many 1-m2 solar panels would be necessary to obtain the same amount of energy that IU purchases annually? (assume an average of 4.5 kWh/m2/day) (Use the answer from number 3 for this calculation) Is it feasible for IU to consider the use of photovoltaic cells for long term energy use? Are there other types of alternative energy that IU could consider in diversifying there energy use? (This is a short answer question you will need to do some research to answer) How many metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents would be produced by using as much electricity as IU purchases? Additionally, Provide 2 examples of the proportion using this website for the question. http://www2.epa.gov/energy/greenhouse-gas-equivalencies-calculator (Use the answer from number 3 for this calculation)
Due: Thursday November 10th in class on paper. You cannot submit this assignment online. If you use any other resources besides the websites provided you need to provide a citation with the assignment Useful Information: Fuel heat contents Coal = 19,340,000 Btu per Short Ton. Note: heat contents of coal vary widely by types of coal Natural Gas = 1,023,000 Btu per 1,000 Cubic Feet (Mcf) or One therm =100,000 Btu Petroleum Fuel Oil = 5,861,814 Btu per Barrel (42 gallons) Note: Heat contents vary by type Average Heat rate in 2012 for specific fuel sources: Coal = 10,498 Btu/kWh, Natural Gas = 8,039 Btu/kWh, Petroleum = 10,991 Btu/kWh Nuclear = 10479 Btu/kWh Last updated: January 15, 2014 http://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.cfm?id=667&t=2
Explanation / Answer
answer- the production of coal from Indiana anually is 64000 tons
coal fuel heat content = 19340000 BTU per short tons
1 shorts tons (2000 lbs)= 19.34 million BTU = 10498 BTu/KwH
0.00052 small tons of coal is required to generate 1kwh electricity
1 small ton = 2000 pond
when 1 kwh electricity is produced by 0.00052 ton
then electricity produced by 65000 ton coal wil be 125000000 Kwh
the natural gas used for electricity production = 3.4M therm
fuel heat content of natural gas =1023000 Btu
for the generation of 1Kwh electricity we used 0.01011 mcf
so the electricity will produced by the 3.4M therms will be 336.3 KWH
answer- coal energy is very harmful to human being as well very hazardous for the environment. the negative impact of coal energy are following
- acid mine drainge- it is water that drain out from coal energy plant. it contantaminated the surface water as well as subsurface water
- coal energy cause air pollution. because various harmful gases like CO2, SO2, NO2, heavy metal emit from coal energy thermal plant. they cause acid rain which is harmful for us
- enhance global warming by the burning of coal huge amount of carbon dioxide is relrease into the atmosphere
- coal fires
- combustion waste, sludges, heavy metal waste is making toxic to water
- methane gas release from the burning of coal
near about 25000 acre land is required for the generation of same amount of electricity from the wind power plant
answer- the positive and negative attribute of wind plant are following
positive attribute- zero green house gases
-eco friendly, low budget
- no environmental pollution , these renewable energy resources
Negative attribute- the killer blades of wind panel kills 20000-37000 birds per year
- strength of wind is not always constant thorughout of the year
- when the turbine are manufractured it create pollution
- noise polution
answer- not the full Indiana is suitable for generationof wind power. Only central part of Indiana state is suitable for electricity generation becuase here wind velocity is 7-8m/s. In the other region is not suitable for where speed is less than 4m/s
