Question
Each part of this question covers a key concept. Each requires at most a few sentences to answer; some are much shorter. Please be concise. (a) In Problem Set 5 we calculated and plotted the rotation curve for the planets in our solar system. Compare the shape of the rotation curve of the Solar System with that of the Milky Way, shown below. Describe and explain the major features of each graph. (b) Astrophysicists have found strong evidence that dark matter exists and that it makes up about 25% of the universe (compared to 5% which is made of visible matter i.e., atoms). How would you explain the evidence for the existence of dark matter to a non-science major?Explanation / Answer
a) This curve shows that the rotation speed of the rotation of objects at enter of galaxy is circular motion and shorter orbital periods than those farther out .
b) velocity curves of spinning galaxies - stars in spinning galaxies were all roughly same velocity , no matter their distance to center . This was due to stars were not rotating around the visible centre of galaxy but around many unknown centres, invisible matter filled the entire galaxy and beyond .
