Question
This measured section is a record of deposition at one location in the basin. You can make some interpretations of the depositional or erosional environment based on the relative sea-level curve on the right, which tells you whether sea level was rising or falling.
Choose one or more:
A. The limestone was deposited in the deepest water.
B. The black shale was deposited in the deepest water.
C. Sea level was highest when the shale was deposited.
D. Sea level was highest when the coal was deposited.
E. The unconformity formed because the land surface was exposed and eroded.
F. Sea level was lowest when the quartz sandstone was deposited.
level Stratigraphic column Low n -High I Rogrossion Transgrossion Unconformity Limostono Regression Black shale Quartz sandstone Transgrossion Coal, sandstone, Unconformity rod shaloExplanation / Answer
Answer B,E. Transgression is the phenomenon in which sea level rises with respect to land and the ocean water move towards land which results in floods This sea level rises when the land sinks, tectonic changes, climate changes like melting of ice. This transgression results in fining upward sequence. Whereas regression is the phenomenon in which shallowing of water takes place. In this sea level falls with respect to the land surface. The sequence formed will be coarsening upward.
We can see from the curve that sea level was highest during the deposition of black shale since the curve formed is very deep and point towards the higher sea level. We also see from the curve that unconformity was formed when the sea level was lower which exposed the land and then this exposed land got eroded.
