Question

Analyze the SkewT-LogP diagram for its ability to indicate severe weather. Was there a positive area? Explain in detail. Was there a change in wind direction or wind speed with height that would indicate wind shear that could have enhanced any severe weather that occurred? Explain in detail.

Explanation / Answer

The Skew log P diagram is a useful thermodynamic diagram in which metereological variables like density, temperature, pressure, water vapour are plotted. The bold curved line on the right hand side is the temperature of air whereas on the left is dew point temperature. There is also a wind barb chart on the right hand side which indicates the direction and magnitude of the winds. The change in wind direction nearly close to 90 degree will cause a significant wind shear. Also a significant change in the wind direction significantly will also cause wind shear that would cause instability in the air. As we can see in the diagram that earlier the wind speed was high but after the altitude of 12030m it changes suddenly and the wind speed becomes low. Also we can see that the wind changes it direction more than 90 at the altitude of 13090m. So this produces a significant shear and cause instability in the atmosphere and results in severe weather conditions.
