In chapter 5, I read about how overharvesting can eliminate species. The American bison was being hunting by the US Army to eliminate the species. They were being killed for their hides and tongues and the carcasses were being left to rot. My question why was the US Army trying to eliminate the species as a source of food? I understand hunting (sort of, but that is a personal opinion), but if the animal is going to be killed for its hide and tongue why would the entire animal not be utilized to feed hungry families?

The american Bison provided the native americans with food, clothing, shelter ,ornaments and many other items.

all the native american states were inhabited by the bison, with the fall of civilization, people started aiming at these bisons and started using this animal as their staple food.

in 1800s the US government wanted some european or white settlers to take some area of lands from native american states, but the latter denied which was not taken by the US government as a friendly gesture.

to teach them a lesson the US government along with the army started a movement to clear all the buffaloes.

large number of buffalo killings took place to deny the native americans from their important source of food. besides these killings there were also contest was held to wipe out the bisons and the US government officials told people not to stop firing until their guns barrels heats up or the ammunitions are stocked off.

bison was only taken into consideration because the people of native america were largely depended upon the bison, as they had been for every purpose of fooding,clothing ,sheltering etc . so hurt the people of native america from their root level will give a deep scar, because they denied to give their lands for european settlements.
