Question
Human Population Growth Past and Future - LAB
Video 1
Watch this youtube video produced by the American Museum of Natural History:
Human Population Growth since 100,000 BC. You will need to expand it, and pause it or review it to answer the questions. Note:
· The yellow line along the bottom shows the year
· Each dot represents 1 million people
· Total population number is at the top
· The red line controls the video:

1. What caused the human population to grow from 1 million to 170 million?
- Growth picked up with the advent of farming. By AD 1, world population reached approximately 170 million people.
2. In which areas is the population most concentrated around the year AD 1?
3. From about year 750-900, the population grew in most areas of Asia except Japan. Why?
4. What happened to population in Europe from about 1100 to 1400 AD? What caused this?
5. Approximately how many people lived in the Americas (North, Central and South America) in 1490?
6. What happened to the population in the Americas between 1492 and 1640? Why did this change occur?
Video 2
Next, watch this video, produced by an organization called Population Education:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khFjdmp9sZk
This video presents the same data as the first video. However, the way this video presents the data is quite different.
7. What are some of the key differences between these two videos? List at least three differences.
8. Speculate on the reasons why these videos are different. What can you say about the motivations of the two producers in presenting this population data?
Video 3
As you saw in the first video above, demographers (scientists who study population growth and project it into the future) expect that human population will eventually level off. Watch this video and answer question 9.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsBT5EQt348
9. Why do many demographers expect that human population will level off?
10. What factors lead to a higher birth rate in developing countries – that is, why is it advantageous to have more children?
11. What factors lead to a lower birth rate in industrialized countries – that is, why do women and families choose to have fewer children in industrial and post-industrial societies?
12. Given what you have learned about the human population, and your knowledge of resources learned in Lab 1, what needs to happen to accommodate for 9 or 11 Billion people living on Planet Earth?
13. What did you learn the most from this lab? What other reflections do you have?
Explanation / Answer
1. What caused the human population to grow from 1 million to 170 million?
- Growth picked up with the advent of farming. By AD 1, world population reached approximately 170 million people.
Yes, the advent of farming resulted in more availability of food and encourages community living which helped to increase the birth rate and decrease the death rate resulting in a population growth from 1 million to 170 million.
2. In which areas is the population most concentrated around the year AD 1?
Around AD 1, the population was most concentrated in three areas namely the Roman empire region across Europe and middles east; Han dynasty ruled area in Eastern China; and the Eastern Indian region below the Himalayas.
3. From about year 750-900, the population grew in most areas of Asia except Japan. Why?
This was because of widespread smallpox in Japan starting from 750 AD.
4. What happened to the population in Europe from about 1100 to 1400 AD? What caused this?
During 1100 to 1400, the population of Europe increase gradually and then dropped suddenly. This was caused by the spread of Bubonic Plague across Europe in the 14th century.
5. Approximately how many people lived in the Americas (North, Central and South America) in 1490?
Approximately 20 million people lived in the Americas in 1490.
6. What happened to the population in the Americas between 1492 and 1640? Why did this change occur?
The population in the Americas increases gradually between 1492 to 1640 mainly due to the Transatlantic slave trade.
