Question
You have a water well at your house. You do not pump water out of the well (i.e., you do not use the well). You can use a measuring stick to monitor the elevation of the water level The Observation Periodically, you monitor the elevation of the water in the well. The level of the water in the well does not change very much, but sometimes it rises by several centimeters over a few days and then falls back down. You've plotted your observation below. Depth to ground water in centimeters below land surface Water level 60 April May The Problem Why isn't the water level steady? Answer the questions below 1. My Hypothesis: 2. Howl would test my hypothesis? 3. What can I predict from my hypothesis?Explanation / Answer
1. The level in the well vary beacause of the various factors like the precipitaion, evapotranspiration, runoff of water. My hypothesis for the fluctuation of water level is that during the month of March there would be more precipitaion(rainfall) as compared to other months and thus there is rise in water level. Then since the water level reaches very to a very shallow zone the water would be lost by spring or in the catchment area will fed the river and hence wwe see this relation again in april when water level rises and again comes back to normal.
2. This hypothesis can be tested by seeing the neerby river and it's flow after the rain fall, if we'll do that we would be seeing that after the rainfall the water flowing in the river is high(High flux of water in the river).
3. The thing that I can predict from my hypothesis is that the nearby river is spring fed.
