Question

While walking through a store one day, I came across an advertisement of an object that claimed to defrost a 1-inch steak in less than 10 minutes. Made of some sort of metal, the object was just about the size of a cookie sheet and was not electric. When I touched it, it felt very cold. The salesperson demonstrated the "super defroster" by placing an ice cube on it. The ice cube melted before my eyes in less than a minute.

Do you believe that it could defrost a steak? Describe how the "super defroster" might work, using information gained from this chapter. In your answer, also explain how something that felt so cold could melt ice so quickly.

Explanation / Answer

These super defroster work on the prnciple of heat conductivity as if we have two object in contact then they both want to come to come on same temperature and hence the heat tranfer starts to take place by flowing from the super defroster to the ice, increasing the temperature of the ice and hence melting it, and decreasing the temperature of the super defroster. This also needs a high contact area so that the heat tranfer will take place very fast.

Now in case of ice as it melts the water occupy large volume and hence heat transfer takes place very fast but in the case of defrosting a steak the heat tranfer won't take place that fast and hence it will defrost the steak but it will take some time to defrost.
