Explanation / Answer

15.

b. E, C, D, B, A

The image is of the Northpole and when viewing from the North, the rotation of the earth is always in the anti-clockwise (counter-clockwise) direction. Therefore, the sequence ECDBA would be the right choice in the chronological order.

16.

a. 3 am

The full moon rises in the east at 6 pm and is halfway up the sky between the eastern horizon and the highest point the moon can get looking south at 9 pm. At midnight the full moon is at its highest point in the sky looking south. Only at 3am the full moon is halfway up the sky between the western horizon and the highest point the moon can get looking south. At 6 am the full moon sets.

17. a. A, D, B, C

A is 3 pm. The New moon rises in the east at 6 am and reaches high Southwest at 3 pm.

B is 12 am. The figure represents the 'waxing gibbous'. It is the second half of the third quarter of moon cycle. Right in between the full moon and the third quarter. It usually rises at 3 pm in the east if the sunrise is at 6 am. So it will reach the high Southwest at 12 am.

C is 6 am. The New moon rises in the exact east at 6 am. Since this is one or two-day old moon past New moon it is slightly above the eastern direction and therefore the time must be around 6 am.

D is 6 pm. The image represents the first quarter moon and it rises in the east at 12 pm noon. In the Figure, the moon has reached halfway between east and the west indicating a time lapse of 6 hours and therefore, the time must be 6 pm.
