Explanation / Answer

Q 4 The figure below represents the rain shadow effect which happens because warm air rises and drops moisture on the windward side of a mountain.

Rain shadow is an area on the leward side or we can say on the behind of a mountain which does not recieve any rains because when the warm air rises along the slope of a mountain, it cools down. Then it cannot hold moisture and the water it is carrying falls as rain. Then it passess the mountains, comes donw along the slope and again gets hotter and doesnot have enough moisture and cooling. So there is no rain on the leward side. Therefore that area usually becomes a desert because of no rain and vegetation.

Q 5. Barrier islands form along coastlines and are shaped by lateral cureents emanating from large ocean circulation patterns as they approach the landmass.

Barrier islands are long, narrow, sandy strectches which are parralel to the mainland. They are formed by various oceanic water movements like tides, waves, storms etc. They protect the mainland from destructive forces of ocean like storms, tsunami, waves etc. There is normally a calm water body like bay or lagoon between the mainland and the barrier island. These islands are found mainly along the eastern coast of North America. They are also habitats for different species of marine animals.
