Question

ent Name Lab section Date Transitional Environments 7. Take a virtual visit to a beachside environment of your choice, could be anywhere in the world. Describe the surface processes and the types of sediments that can be found on your beach of choice. 8. What is the source of the sediments on "your" beach? 9. In geologic time, what sedimentary rocks and structures could form from your chosen beach environment? 10. What is the difference between a delta and an estuary? Explain the difference and finda delta and an estuary in the United States.

Explanation / Answer

7. Beach refers to the part which is washed by those waves that are coming to the coast. It has sandy sediment which are well-sorted, well-rounded and this is a characteristices of a very mature type of sedimnent as the source of this material is very far away from the beach. Apart from this there is very high sorting seen in the particles that are found at the beach.

8. The sediments can be derived from various areas of high altitude where the parent rocks are weathered and erode by water and then is also transported by the water only. This is the reason why the particles are very rounded in nature as due to abrasion that happens during the course of this transportation process.

9. The rocks that can be formed is sandstone and if there is some silt size particle availabe than we can expect some siltstone too apart from this structure like a storm ridge at the top of the foreshore can take place in this type of setting and a back-beach gravel ridge can also be seen in this type of environment.

10. In USA we have Mississippi River Delta and San Francisco Bay is one of the estuary in the U.S. state of California. When the river during its old age reaches to the ocean then sediment brought down by the river builds out as a body into the lake or sea this led to the formation of delta while in estuary there is no build-out into the sea and here we will find a mixture of fresh water and seawater with accumulation of sediment within the confines of the estuary.
