Explanation / Answer

EARTHQUAKES: ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION

Location

Origin

Distribution

Mid Oceanic Ridge

Originate at less than 70 km depth below the ocean floor

Found on the floors of Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean

Subduction Zone

Originate at more than 300 km depth below land or ocean floor

Happen along the South-East Indian Ocean, West and East Pacific Ocean

Continental shield

Since the shield is a tectonically stable area, earthquakes are very unlikely to happen.

VOLCANOES: ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION

Location

Origin

Distribution

Mid Oceanic Ridge

Originate below the oceanic crust from silica-poor magma

Found on the floors of Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean

Subduction Zone

Originate below the continental crust from silica-rich magma

Happen along the South-East Indian Ocean, West and East Pacific Ocean

Continental shield

Since the shield is a tectonically stable area, earthquakes are very unlikely to happen. However, volcanoes do erupt in the east coast of Africa originating from near-surface basaltic magma.

Earthquakes and volcanoes occur at the above mentioned locations due to the active tectonism that is happening continuously on and below the Earth’s crust. The process of tectonism is explained using the theory of plate tectonics which states that the crust is divided into several plates and are in motion relative to each other that results in collision and sliding between the plates. Earthquakes and volcanoes occur at the mid-ocean ridges due to diverging collision of two plates, whereas at subduction zones they occur due to converging collision of two plates.

Major and intense earthquakes cause massive damage to human lives and natural environment within a short span of time. The loss is in the form of deaths of people due to collapse of buildings and other artificial structures such as dams and power stations. Plant and animal life also get killed, especially in densely vegetated areas. Deadly and persistent volcanoes also affect lives in the same way, in that blasts of toxic gases such as sulfur dioxide, bursts of ash and mud cause a lot of damage to property, agriculture, forests and so on.
