Before going further first let's see
A) stream - any Mass of running water flowing across slope of mountain or hill
B) river - any mass of running water which is bigger than stream. Actually, every stream finally meets to the river
From above 2 photograph it is easy to find the shape of valley
In first picture a) it is U-shaped valley, here stream gradient is gentle hence gentle sides are created. It is mainly form by glacial erosion, where glacier get accumulated and becomes heavy and start moving downward, erosion starts and formation of U shaped valleys.
and in b) it is V-shaped valley, it is mainly form by river, here stream gradient is steep, steep walls are created. This type of valley mainly form by stream erosion. River erodes mountain or hills vertically, V shape valley forms.
