: contrast, grains ll gource tend to have sharp edges and corners t hot had the opportunity to collide as much and are called angular. EXERCISE 6.4 What Could Move the Clasts? Name: Course: Section Date: Some agents of transport can move sediment that ranges widely in grain size. Match the letter of the transport the left-hand column with the maximum grain size it can transport listed in the right-hand column. (a) house-sized block (b) boulder (c) cobble (d) sand (e) silt (f) mud -turbulent stream during a flood -very slow-moving stream ocean waves or desert winds glacial ice quiet water fast-moving stream

Explanation / Answer

The size of the particles depends upon the energy of the transporting agent, this means that more the energy of the transporting agent the higher is the size of the particles transported by that agent. Therefore the biggest sized particle that is house sized practice can only be transported by turbulent stream during a flood while on the other extreme end the smallest particle that is mud will be transported by quiet water.

Using this concept:

House sized block - turbulent stream during a flood

Boulder - fast moving stream

Cobble - glacier ice

Sand - ocean waves or desert winds

Silt - very slow moving stream

Mud - quiet water
