Question

You are managing two weedy species (A and B) in your apple orchard. Experiments have determined that species A has an economic threshold of 5 plants /row foot and species B has an economic threshold of 2 plants/row foot.

Which of the following is true about the scenario listed above?

Species A is more damaging than species B on a per individual basis

Species B is more damaging than species A on a per individual basis

Species A and B cause the same damage on a per individual basis

There is no relationship between the damage caused by species A and B

A.

Species A is more damaging than species B on a per individual basis

B.

Species B is more damaging than species A on a per individual basis

C.

Species A and B cause the same damage on a per individual basis

D.

There is no relationship between the damage caused by species A and B

Explanation / Answer

The answer should be

Species B is more damaging than species A on a per individual basis

Economic Thresholds (ET) set the levels of a pest population must reach before treatment to control the pest can begin. These are often expressed numerically and indicate the population levels that will cause economic or aesthetic damage. The pest density, at the value of the economic threshold, some control should be exerted to prevent a pest population from increasing further and causing economic loss. They are the type of Action thresholds. They are hard numbers calculated from equations developed through field research.

ETs are the predictive part of an EIL(economic injury level) - ET pair – one acts on an ET in order to prevent the EIL from being exceeded.

They are often measured in pest density. Here, in the above problem, Species A has ET of 5 plants/row foot which means anything more than that density will crossover the value to EIL; while the same economic injury level (same because the crop is same - Apple) can be reached by Species B whose ET density is only 2 plants/ row foot. Therefore Species B is more damaging.

B.

Species B is more damaging than species A on a per individual basis
