Question

3) Discuss the reason for seasons in your own words? What causes us to have four seasons? How would you answer someone that believes we have seasons because sometimes the Earth is close to the sun and sometime it is far away? What else did you learn about seasons and the tilts of planets that was new to you? What don't you still understand about seasons? Do you understand what we mean about the Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle and what is their meaning and where they arise from? 4) How about the section on Phases of the Moon, Eclipses and Tides? What was new to you or surprising that you did not know before? What did you already know? Is there something you still don't understand about any of the topics like phases, why we see only 1 side of the moon, why and when do eclipses take place or why and when do tides occur? What do Spring Tides and Neap Tides mean? Why are eclipses not visible every month? What is the meaning of annular solar eclipse? What is a partial or umbral lunar eclipse? Why are lunar eclipses visible to more people and for a longer duration? 2

Explanation / Answer

3) There are four seasons every year on Earth as it revolves around the Sun. It takes a year to complete one revolution which takes place in the form of a circular-elliptical orbit. While the Earth is orbiting in that fashion, it falls on four different positions relative to the Sun. The Northern and Southern hemispheres of Earth get illuminated by the Sun differently as their position is tilted relative to the orbital plane.

The Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn are the two major latitudes that demarcate the northern and southern boundary of the tropical region, i.e. 23.5°N. and 23.5°S. Latitudes are the angle measured relative to the horizontal equatorial plane for easy identification of locations. Arctic and Antarctic Circles fall on those latitudes which enable us to identify polar regions.

4) Eclipses take place when the position of Moon's position is exactly between Sun and Earth (solar position) or Earth's position is exactly between Sun and Moon (lunar eclipse). This doesn't happen every month because the Moon is revolving around Earth at its own rate and is not stationary.

The tides occur due to the relative positions of Earth, Moon, and Sun.

Spring tides occur when Moon falls in the orbit of Earth around Sun, whereas neap tides occur when Moon is perpendicular to that orbit.

Annular solar eclipse is one of those kinds of a solar eclipse when the Moon is farthest from Earth, thus causing in incomplete blocking of Sun.

When the Earth's shadow partly covers the Moon, it is called a partial lunar eclipse.

Since the Moon is a much smaller celestial body, the shadow falling on it from Earth covers a large area and thus it takes a long time for the Moon to shift away from the shadow.
